Notes

* How do I install
Windows 98?
To install Windows 98 as a
minimum:
-
Go into BIOS setup and
enable USB
-
Install Win98 on your
system
-
For VIA Chipset
mainboards, download and install the VIA IrQ
ver. 1.3 routing miniport driver from VIA driver page at www.viatech.com
as a minimum.
note: VIA also has a 4 in
1 driver which addresses several Windows 98 issues. Do not
forget to reboot after installing any driver or patch so that it can
take effect. Do not install all your drivers at once without
re-booting.
* How can I
prevent my CD-ROM from stalling during audio playback in Windows 98?
Select your CD-ROM in
Device Manager and uncheck the DMA option.
* What is the DMI
utility used for?
The DMI (Desktop
Management Interface) the configuration utility can be used to
maintain the Management Information Format Database (MIFD). DMI is
also able to auto-detect and record information pertinent to the
system such as: the CPU type/speed, internal/external frequencies, and
memory size. The onboard BIOS detects as much system information as
possible and stores it in a 4KB block in the motherboard's flash EPROM
(BIOS), and allows the DMI to retrieve information from this database.
The DMI utility also allows the system integrator or end-user to add
additional information into the MIFD such as: serial numbers, housing
configurations, and vendor information. This information cannot be
detected by the motherboard's BIOS, and needs to be manually entered
through the DMI configuration utility and updated into the MIFD.
* How can I recover
my system settings after altering them with the DMI utility?
Be very careful when using
the DMI utility. An error may cause you system to be unstable. This
utility should not be used with Windows or DOS versions higher than
6.22. If you accidentally alter some system settings using the DMI
utility, under Windows 95 (or under Windows 95 DOS mode), flash the
system BIOS immediately. Do not reboot.
-
* Why does my
system hang during DMI pool initialization?
This could be related to a
bad BIOS or hard drive. Here are a few things you can do:
-
First, make sure you
properly partitioned, and formatted your hard drive. If you can
not boot to a floppy to format your hard drive, then test with
another hard drive.
-
Power down the
system and remove the battery. Ground out the terminals by
touching the positive and negative end of the battery socket
with a metal object. Replace the battery and reboot your system.
-
If you have tried
steps 1 and 2 already, then your probably need a BIOS chip
replacement.
